Ringed Seal Diet and Body Condition in the Amundsen Gulf region, Eastern Beaufort Sea

چکیده

Diet from stomach contents and body condition morphometric measurements were obtained for 169 (108 stomachs analysed) ringed seals (Pusa hispida) the Amundsen Gulf region in western Canadian Arctic 2015 to 2018. Sampling was subsistence-harvested three communities of Paulatuk (spring, summer, autumn), Sachs Harbour (summer), Ulukhaktok (winter), Northwest Territories. Stomach separated through sieves by hand, taxa identified lowest taxonomic level possible weighed. Stomachs fullest (by weight prey count) autumn, which suggests that foraging most intense successful at time. A total 93 taxa, including 17 fish 76 invertebrate species identified. Several regularly found together, common being cod (Boreogadus saida), sand lance (Ammodytes hexapterus), capelin (Mallotus villosus), hyperiid amphipods (Themisto spp.). Condition inferred blubber thickness, although showing considerable variation among sites years, had a seasonal relationship with maximal depth during autumn winter. Overall, diet broadly similar those reported other areas while also indicating some degree regional specificity. When compared same area 1980s, results presented here more diverse, new or increased numbers subarctic (e.g., saffron cod, Eleginus gracilis) samples. This finding is likely consequence climate warming, as increasing move north warming ocean temperatures Arctic.

Atmospheric control of sea-ice thickness variability in the Amundsen Gulf, Canadian Beaufort Sea, and over the Labrador Shelf

Sea-ice thicknesses observed in Canadian coastal waters with helicopter-borne electromagnetic–laser sensors show large interannual variability caused by atmospheric fluctuations in two years for two areas where surveys were repeated, one in the Amundsen Gulf of the Canadian Beaufort Sea and one over the Labrador Shelf. For the Amundsen Gulf, the bimodal ice thickness peaks shifted by 40 cm to t...

Ringed and bearded seal densities in the eastern Chukchi Sea, 1999â•fi2000

Aerial surveys were conducted in 1999 and 2000 to estimate the densities of ringed (Phoca hispida) and bearded (Erignathus barbatus) seals in the eastern Chukchi Sea. Survey lines were focused mainly on the coastal zone within 37 km of the shoreline, with additional lines flown 148–185 km offshore to assess how densities of seals changed as a function of distance from shore. Satellite-linked ti...

Bowhead whale body condition and links to summer sea ice and upwelling in the Beaufort Sea

We examined the response of bowhead whale (Balaena mysticetus) body condition to summer sea ice conditions and upwelling-favorable winds. We used a long-term dataset collected from whales of the Bering–Chukchi–Beaufort Seas (BCB) stock to estimate various body condition indices (BCI’s) for individual whales that were harvested by Alaskan Eskimos. A series of offshore regions frequented by bowhe...

Three-year assessment of particulate organic carbon fluxes in Amundsen Gulf (Beaufort Sea) Satellite observations and sediment trap measurements

Surface concentrations and vertical fluxes of particulate organic carbon (POC) were assessed in the Amundsen Gulf (southeastern Beaufort Sea, Arctic Ocean) over the years 2004 to 2006 by using ocean color remote-sensing imagery and sequential sediment traps moored over the ca. 400m isobath. Environmental conditions (sea ice, wind) and oceanographic variables (temperature, salinity, fluorescence...
